As with most of my street photography, I set out with my camera without looking or aiming for anything. In Durham, I found a unique combination of tradition and modernity, youth and age, wealth and scarcity. Oddly, it feels like it can only be these idiosyncratic contrasts that motivate the pride with which residents regard this small town.
As I walked out of the town centre towards the train station, I came across a children’s playground whose walls were lined with gravestones. As morbid a suggestion as it may be, this unexpected juxtaposition between new and old felt like a fitting, if rather disturbing, microcosm of Durham as a whole.
