Field Day is back for its eighth year. Field Day doesn’t return by sneaking into the room, it marches in with a mariachi band. Over the weekend beginning the 6th of June, Field Day takes over Victoria Park in London, bringing an eclectic and an oh, so, so good line-up. Caribou and Ride headline. Clark, Floating Points and John Talbot bring the electronica. Run the Jewels and Ratking (check out the new 700 Fill mixtape) will give the best of modern rap music. Tei Shi and Shura cover your dose of perfect electronic pop music. Savages, Eagulls, and Viet Cong will be bashing guitars, just to remind you that synths are not the only instrument in the world.
Oh, yeah, and Patti Smith is playing! Having a Rock-and-Roll Hall of Famer play on the same stage as some of the best contemporary dance musicians tells you everything you need to know about the quality and diversity of Field Day.
Field Day also offers a great range of drinks and street food. The festival has traditionally created village fete in its grounds, so expect more of that warm, laid back feel this year. Mac Demarco even got so into the community spirit he recorded a video especially for the festival.
Returning to music on a final point. Do not miss Toumani & Sidiki Diabate on the Saturday. These guys are literally one of the best acts to come out Africa at the moment. Let me re-phrase that to make sure you get it: they are arguably the best from an entire continent. Just think of what you would pay to see act on that level from Europe and a ticket to Field Day becomes one of the deals of the century.
