Young, Glasgow based producer Stephen Simpson makes his debut on new label 1Ø Pills Mate with a thumping, 303-laden release. The warehouse rave relentlessness captures the label’s ethos (and name) perfectly. Untitled Acid takes you straight to a sweaty basement, with its vague and unassuming title ensuring that nothing distracts from its melodic simplicity. The twitching rhythm of ND follows perfectly.
Whether there is an underlying nostalgia to Simpson’s productions doesn’t really matter – it is not an unnatural imitation of the past. More to the point, having just finished his A – Levels, he cannot be truly nostalgic about the culture surrounding tracks like the finely crafted Chicagood. To capture that spirit without it sounding forced takes skill. Simpson is one to watch.
